Feeling rather odd about this meeting, Phillip really didnât know what to make of it.
It wasnât as if they were doing anything truly that earth shattering. Nothing more than a new change to an existing product, in fact.
Which was why it felt all the more appropriate that the mercenary company had been engaged yesterday. Hired exclusively to protect the workshop, Madeline, and her family. No-one was allowed inside other than Madeline, Lenore, Mim, Mildred, Phillip, or Alice.
Sheâd stopped by briefly to inspect the one-wheeled cart sheâd be purchasing.
Madeline had been somewhat awestruck to be in her presence.
Unbeknown to Phillip, Alice had quite the reputation. Even in bad deals she often came out on top, or neutral. She was a true mercantile shark that swam deep waters and with women whose wealth were many times her own.
Whatâd been surprising to him though, was that Alice had brought a private lunch for him and her. Had wanted to just talk to him about how his day was going.
There was nothing behind it other than spending time with him and talking about things.
It was a stark night and day difference between before she saw his mother and after. As if they were two different people.
Though, Phillip was finding himself rather attracted to her. She was amusing, and had a quirky sense of humor. One he hadnât expected.
âThatâs the building,â Lenore said. âI rented it from the owner for today only. I didnât think itâd be wise to invite her anywhere near our own properties. Nor to go to hers.â
âSee, this is why you make me nervous, Lenny. Youâre rapidly growing up into a clone of your older sister,â Mim grumbled. âJust without the heartless idiot, aspect.â
âWhy thank you. I look forward to coming by during holidays with my husband in tow. Maybe if youâre lucky heâll give you a hug as a present,â taunted Lenore.
âYouâre both going to lose when Dread steals him away while you bicker with one another,â warned Tonie. âThen sheâs going to run off with him to a quiet corner of the world. Weâll all go with of course. Share in the booty with her.â
Phillip couldnât help himself and had to choke down a laugh.
Mim on the other hand didnât bother and laughed for both of them.
Lenore sighed then nodded her head, looking annoyed.
âI do forget how close Milly is. And quiet,â Lenore murmured, glancing back at the large guard who stood just behind Phillip.
âAnd alone with him every night,â Frankie said with a chortle.
âDonât remind me,â grumbled Mim. âSo envious. Does he ride her? Is she loud? I bet she is. Iâd be loud. So loud. Iâd want everyone to know Phil was having me.â
âEnough,â Phillip said softly as all four guards started to laugh at that, while Mildred turned a deep scarlet. âWeâre almost on the night guard. They donât need to hear this.â
The night guard wasnât a bad group of women, they just werenât his day guard. He was considerably closer to them.
Two of them were waiting up ahead at the door to the rented building.
